As an Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant and a former non-profit program director, I am very familiar with the challenges facing early care and education providers and programs. From quality standards to staff turnover, from frustrating behaviors (children’s behaviors - and adults!) to interpersonal conflicts, I know that running a high-quality program demands a lot from everyone involved.
With all the moving pieces of program management and development, program consultation offers space for directors and staff to reflect on their experiences of the important work they are doing for young children and their families and to consider how best to respond to the complexities they encounter. The focus of our work together might be supporting staff in understanding behaviors they observe in the classroom, considering how to engage parents more effectively, figuring out how to make appropriate changes to program policies, learning about staff needs and improving morale, or any of the many operational challenges that pop up frequently in programs.
I have provided program consultation to staff at infant-toddler centers, preschools, and early intervention programs, supporting direct service providers to reflect on the interactions and behaviors they experience and observe in the classroom or with their clients. As program manager, I also supported program administrators through consultation, exploring with them the needs of their programs and developing ideas for how to support staff, enhance morale, incorporate more reflective practice, and meet the needs of participants, funders, and partners.
Program consultation works best when it is a regularly scheduled space for reflection. If you or your program would like to learn more about program consultation, please contact me.
