couples THerapy
In couples therapy my goal is to create space for individuals to get comfortable sharing with each other emotions or needs that may be uncomfortable for them to admit or acknowledge. We look at what each individual is bringing to the relationship (their past and present) and the interactions or dynamics between these histories. We may work on skills like communication, active listening, and expressing empathy in the service of each partner being able to share vulnerable thoughts and feelings without either partner becoming overwhelmed by emotion.
Like in individual therapy, I want us to look for and understand patterns that you’ve developed in this relationship and others over the course of your life. Once we’ve identified these patterns and can spot them when they arise, we can start to shift the underlying story and create a more accurate one for the present moment.
Right now might be a good time to start couples therapy with me if…
you’re struggling to communicate your needs to each other
you’ve gone through a life transition together (such as becoming parents) and the time you have less time for your relationship
you’re noticing you are quick to anger or quick to accommodate in order to avoid fighting
you’re feeling disconnected from each other
you’ve had challenges with change or transition in the past and you know you’re about to face a new transition
While my web site has information about my approach and the types of clients I’ve worked with, a lot of our work will depend on your specific situation and needs, and you likely have other questions. Please contact me for more information or to see if my approach is what you’re looking for.
